Expandable graphite is natural flake graphite treated so that it expands many times in volume when heated. This makes it useful in flame retardant, intumescent fire-stop and flexible graphite products.
Expandable graphite is offered in different flake sizes and expansion grades. Flake size, expansion volume, onset temperature and carbon content depend on the grade and are shared with the quotation, with a COA on request. Packing is in bags suited to the quantity, from small packs for formulation trials to larger lots for production. For non-expandable grades, see our graphite powder and graphite granules.
Store in a cool, dry place in closed bags, away from heat sources, sparks and open flame, because the material expands sharply on heating. Avoid dust formation, wear gloves, goggles and a dust mask, and follow the SDS for the specific grade.

It is natural flake graphite treated with chemicals between its layers. When heated, these layers push apart and the flakes expand into a worm-like, low-density form.
In a fire, the graphite expands and forms a thick, insulating layer on the surface, which slows heat transfer and the spread of flame.
The choice depends on flake size, expansion volume and the temperature at which expansion starts. Tell us your product and we will share suitable grade details.
No. Ordinary graphite powder does not expand on heating. Expandable graphite is a specially treated grade.
