Foundry coal dust, also called sea coal, is finely ground coal added to green moulding sand. It helps give cleaner casting surfaces and makes sand easier to remove from iron castings.
Foundry coal dust is supplied as fine powder ground from selected coal. Fineness, volatile matter, ash, sulphur and moisture are shared with the quotation, with a COA on request, because the right values depend on your sand system and castings. Packing is in HDPE bags, with trial quantities for new foundries and regular lots for running plants. Other foundry materials are listed under Refractory & Foundry Minerals.
Store in a dry, covered and well-ventilated area away from heat and flame. Fine coal dust can burn and, in a dust cloud, can ignite, so keep areas clean and avoid dust build-up. Wear a dust mask and goggles while handling, and follow the SDS.

During pouring, the coal releases gases and forms a carbon layer that reduces metal penetration into the sand, which gives a cleaner casting surface.
